Creative Commons Licenses

You may have run across material that is published under a "Creative Commons license".  A Creative Commons license is a way to reserve some of your copyright rights while allowing others to reproduce your works for free.

If you produce copyrighted material that you'd like to make available to others for free, but do not want to put into the public domain (which means giving up all your rights), you might be interested in a Creative Commons license yourself.

Here's what Creative Commons says about themselves:  "Creative Commons defines the spectrum of possibilities between full copyright - all rights reserved - and the public domain - no rights reserved.  Our licenses help you keep your copyright while inviting certain uses of your work - a 'some rights reserved' copyright."

The most accommodating license is BY (Attribution only) - "lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation".

The most restrictive is BY-NC-ND (Attribution, Non-Commercial, No Derivatives) - "This license is often called the 'free advertising' license because it allows others to download your works and share them with others as long as they mention you and link back to you, but they can't change them in any way or use them commercially."

"A Creative Commons license is based on copyright. So they apply to all works that are protected by copyright law.  The kinds of works that are protected by copyright law are books, websites, blogs, photographs, films, videos, songs and other audio & visual recordings, for example."

Creative Commons is a non-profit organization, and their services and software are free.  Find out more on their website, http://creativecommons.org.

To get a Creative Commons license for one of your works, visit the Creative Commons website and click on the "License Your Work" link at the top of the page.

DUSTWOOD MEDIA CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSES:

My free Christian clip art is available under a Creative Commons BY license.

You are free to use, share and edit (remix) the image(s) only under the condition that you attribute the work to the person who originated it - in this case me, Jeri-Lynn Woods.

The attribution must be included with the work in whatever form you distribute it, and in such a way that it can be found and read (without distracting from the work - for instance, in a printed notice on the back side of a greeting card using the image).

You must not suggest or imply that I endorse your work.  For re-use or distribution, you must make clear the terms of this license.

My Christian meditations, Christian wallpaper and Christian screensavers are available under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license.

You are free to use and share the work only under the condition that you attribute the work to me.

You may NOT use the work for commercial purposes, and you may not change or edit the work.
